Canon Powershot G6

The Canon PowerShot G6 is now here. Even though the design has changed compared to the predecessor models G5 and G3 and the camera has become smaller – despite the simultaneous growth of the LC colour screen – it is essentially a “copy” of these models, upgraded to 7.1 megapixels, with hardly any changes in functions and features. For example, the PowerShot G6 continues to zoom over the 35-140 mm (35 mm equivalent) range at a speed of F2.0-3.0 and, like all G Series models, is equipped with a rotatable and tiltable colour LCD screen. This measures about 2″ (5.1 cm) diagonally on the G6 and serves as an alternative viewfinder as well as for subsequent image display and menu settings. All G-Series PowerShot models also share the ability to expand with optical accessories such as wide-angle and tele-converter lenses (using a lens adapter) or flash-side TTL hot shoe. The flash metering and control is supported by the proven E-TTL technology, which also works wirelessly with multiple flash units. Other Canon-typical developments can be found in the G6 in the form of a DIGIC signal processor, iSAPS subject analysis and autofocus, which can be switched from AiAF control (9 measuring fields) to Flexizone control (AF measuring field freely placeable). The PowerShot G6 still stores images in either JPEG or RAW format (or both simultaneously if desired) on removable CompactFlash type I and II memory cards (including miniature hard drives). What’s new about the G6 is that it can now also record video sequences in VGA resolution (but only at 10 fps and in limited length) and that it can achieve a slightly slower frame rate of 1.2 frames per second in standard continuous shooting mode due to the larger data volumes. Other features of the G6, like its predecessors, include numerous scene programs, user memory, a switchable neutral density filter, direct printing without a PC, PTP support and much more.
